Road tax is usually a one-time payment for private vehicles, calculated on the ex-showroom price. Fixed charges — RTO registration (~₹600), HSRP plate (~₹1,100 car / ~₹400 two-wheeler), and hypothecation (~₹1,500 if financed) — are separate and add a bit more on top.

How this is calculated

Most Indian states charge road tax as a single, one-time percentage of your vehicle's ex-showroom price (the price after GST, before any dealer discount is applied) at the time of registration. The percentage rises in slabs — a costlier vehicle attracts a higher rate, not just a higher rupee amount. Three states — Gujarat, Chandigarh and Jharkhand — are exceptions and calculate the tax on the pre-GST invoice value instead, which works out lower.

Electric vehicles get a rebate almost everywhere, but the size of that rebate varies a lot and is changing quickly — Karnataka, for example, ended its full EV exemption in April 2026. Treat every number on this page as a planning estimate, confirmed on Parivahan before you commit to a purchase.
